Summer of Healing is a camp that helps youth ages 8-17 recover from the detrimental effects of sexual abuse. For children and teens that have been sexually abused in their young lives, recovery can be difficult. For the past 17 years, Family Counseling Service of Northern Nevada has offered this unique camp experience to Nevada youth to help with their healing process.
The camp is specifically for those children and youth who have been sexually abused, giving all attendees a safe place for healing. Summer of Healing Camp consists of a "sleep away camp" style atmosphere coupled with a counseling component, which is essential for healing. Campers will attend group therapy daily, and also have access to individual counseling if needed. Campers swim, hike, bike, do arts and craft, and engage in other fun camp activities, including cabin games and full camp activities. Campers interact with all other campers during the day, as well as Camp Ronald McDonald Camp staff and Summer of Healing staff. Please note, there is not a lot of down time during the day. A typical day at camp looks something like this:
7:00-8:00 Rise and shine!
8:00-8:15 Flagpole and songs (bring your singing voice)
8:15-9:00 Breakfast in the cafeteria with your cabin
9:00-9:30 Clean up your cabin
9:30-10:20 Waterfront
10:30-11:20 Group Counseling
11:30-12:20 Drama
12:20-12:30 Flagpole and songs!
12:30-1:30 Lunch in the cafeteria with your cabin
1:30-2:30 Choice of yoga, family sculpting or group work
2:30-4:30 Free time (you can make a short phone call home, swim, bike, etc)
4:30-5:15 Showers and cleaning up for dinner
5:15-5:30 Flagpole and songs
5:30-6:30 Dinner in the cafeteria with your cabin
6:30-7:00 Lawn Games! (full camp activity)
7:00-8:30 Battle of the Cabins
8:30-9:00 Campfire
9:00-10:00 Showers and end of day cabin activity
10:00 Lights out!
Most camp activities are done with a camper's cabin, but there are several activities that the whole camp is involved with. Cabin assignments are made by the camp coordinator based on camper's age, previous camp experience and other provided information. Cabin assignments are not negotiable, though staff meet nightly to go over cabin issues and may make changes to benefit the whole of the cabin. Because campers do everything with their cabin, it is hard to switch cabins mid week or allow campers to come up mid week. Please, no bunking requests.
Eagle Lake is geographically close to Susanville, but a mountain range separates the two. This means phone service is spotty at best. In our experience, track phones and pay as you go phones don't get reception at camp. The big carriers (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile) only have limited reception. It is possible your camper may not be able to reach you during camp. If you prefer, you can send a calling card, but due to time constraints and there only being one landline, calling card calls are limited to 5 minutes. Campers have access to phones only during the start of free time.
Family Counseling Service has a nurse on site to hand out medications, and treat minor illness and injury, bug bites and scrapes. If a major illness or injury occurs, campers may be transported to the nearest hospital and parents will be notified. Please make sure to note on the application any medical concerns your camper has.
You can mail your fully completed application to the address at the top of the page, or fax your application to 775-337-2971. If you are local, feel free to bring it in person. You can scan and e-mail it to caitlyn@familycounselingservice.org, but please note our e-mail is not encrypted. Application deadline is June 1st. Due to overwhelming interest by new attendees, if your child has attended two or more camps, they will automatically be placed on a wait list this year. Campers will only be considered for one camp this year.
